On The Dyno: Presented by OEM.DIGITAL Pty Ltd
Aussie ignition tech start-up OEM.Digital is winning praise around the world with their feature rich Hand Held Dyno Ignitions – they truly are more than just an ignition.
Italianiron Classics, based in Tucson, Arizona USA are purveyors of classic Ducati parts and accessories. Owner Scot Wilson shares his experience with the Australian made Hand Held Dyno® Ignitions.
“We keep an eye out for innovative products to offer our classic bike customers. They have expensive bikes and only want the very best products available, so when we heard about the Hand Held Dyno® Ignition we had to try it, and it has certainly surpassed our expectations! It sounds crazy, a classic bike ignition with Bluetooth and a Smartphone App, why? But the App is like magic, with many useful features, turn the key on and there’s your battery voltage. There’s no need to reach for the multimeter, pull side covers off etc to test the battery or know if your regulator is failing. It’s all done in an instant.

“Next press the starter button and the App’s Tacho lights up and shows RPM. When setting idle we noted that old mechanical tachos don’t read accurately so that was a wake up call, idling the engine too low can bash big end bearings!
“We purchased the Tuner Edition of the App that has a Race Tacho with shift lights that can monitor and record data from up to 11 sensors – very clever and fun, even for a novice. With the 9 pre-programmed ignition maps to choose from, all selected wirelessly via the App, we’re able to dial-in the performance on the Dyno, it’s a simple tap on the App to change Ignition maps while the engine is running. With no laptops and their cables to trip over, it’s a delight!

“On our Ducati MHR test bike we have also fitted SmartCarb carburetors that we sell. Corey Dyess, owner of SmartCarb Carburetors, who we collaborate with, has also worked with the Hand Held Dyno® Ignition. Corey was surprised when one of his customers, Kevin Bracken, owner of the Bracken Kraken Bevel Racer reached out with engine Air Fuel Ratio data he had just collected on his iPhone via the Hand Held Dyno® Ignition on his bike. Kevin had just won the open class category at Laguna Seca and he wanted to know if improvements to carburetion could be made. Corey duly responded with some tuning recommendations. The “Hand Held Dyno” moniker really does make sense!

“Like Kevin Bracken, we too have found that the Hand Held Dyno® Ignition/SmartCarb combination to be a good match. Both are very easy to install and really do improve performance as our Dyno testing shows.
“The Hand Held Dyno® is the first ignition we’ve installed that doesn’t require a mechanic to set static timing – a step where novices can get into trouble with installing other ignitions. Without the need for this step installing is easy. The wiring comes with connectors already fitted so there’s no need for crimping connectors and the diagrams are very user friendly for the installer regardless of their level of experience and skill. We have also installed a Hand Held Dyno® kit on our Ducati 750 Pantah Racer. Each time we fire up the engine we marvel at the App – it’s a lot of fun! We can even monitor and record carburetor balance with it, or AFR at +100MPH!”
Hand Held Dyno® Ignitions are now available for most CB Hondas to 1978, Kawasaki Z1 to 1982, and all Belt and Bevel Ducatis to 1988.
