Fine tuning your ride: 1973 Kawasaki Z1 900

Good Gear

Out with the old... The Hand Held Dyno digital ignition (right) installed on a 1973 Kawasaki Z1 900.

On The Dyno: Presented by OEM.DIGITAL Pty Ltd

The generation of superbikes that began with the Honda CB750 and the Z1 Kawasaki revolutionised the joys of motorcycling for a new generation, but as sophisticated as the technology was at the time, well, times have changed.

In a 7-part series of technical articles we’ll be looking at the advantages of installing the Hand Held Dyno® digital ignition from OEM.Digital – a performance ignition packed with 21st century innovation to make your machine more enjoyable, reliable and easier to maintain.

You know that feeling the night before tomorrow’s ride? Is the battery fully charged, will the bike start at sparrow’s fart tomorrow? Now you can dispense with the chore of getting out the multimeter (if you can find it) and untangling its cords. With the Hand Held Dyno® ignition and free Smartphone App you can complete these tasks in moments. Just key-on, open the App and check the status!

The Hand Held Dyno system is an easy plug and play installation.

Easy installation

Replacing the existing starter system on your Kawasaki Z1 900 with a Hand Held Dyno® digital ignition is easy. You just bolt it into where the original contacts point plate mechanism sat, connect the cabling as per the supplied wiring diagram and you’re done. No static timing adjustments are necessary. And there’s no need for wire crimpers, as the kit provides screw terminals that enable you to easily customise and route your cables to the required length from each component back to the ICU (Ignition Control Unit).

And that’s just for starters. Equipped with Bluetooth, the Hand Held Dyno® digital ignition has a very useful Free Smartphone App. With it, checking your battery voltage and charge rate before tomorrow’s ride is a simple matter of turning on the key and opening the App. The App also displays RPM and ignition map selection of the 9 pre-programmed maps.

The Tuner Edition App supplies a host of diagnostic options including (L-R) Race tacho screen; Monitor carburetor balance, anytime, anywhere; the Sensor Page – optional sensors can be fitted permanently to your bike to record all the data you see on this screen incl. Tachometer, Air Fuel Ratio, EGT 1 and 2 (can be any combination of sensors), MAP 1 and 2, GPS Speed, Battery voltage and charging rate and more.

If you want more features, like GPS speedometer, shift lights, accelerometer and much more, upgrade to our Tuner Edition App for only $100. That’s a saving of maybe $1,000s or more on an aftermarket Dashboard with none of these features, that also requires you to hack into your wiring harness!

Blake and Dudley Lister from Dudley’s Performance with Michael Arnott from OEM.Digital Pty Ltd.

Our featured 1973 Kawasaki Z1 900 was fitted with the Hand Held Dyno® digital ignition by the team at Dudley’s Performance in Wyong on the NSW Central Coast. Before the installation, business owner Dudley Lister (veteran race mechanic and technician for some of the most famous and successful teams a few years back) first ran the Z1 on his in-house dynamometer to get a base reading. Once the new starter kit was installed a subsequent dyno test showed greater torque and an increase in horsepower.

So that’s all there is to it. If you have a modern classic like a Z1, or indeed a CB Honda or classic Ducati that the Hand Held Dyno® is compatible with, a whole new world of convenient and enhanced performance is at your fingertips.
