Three weeks after his 18th birthday on 29th January 1956, Kel Carruthers competing at the International meeting at Bandiana, Victoria on the B31-engined special
(with a Royal Enfield frame) built by his father Jack. The previous Easter, Kel had made a dream debut at Bathurst, winning the Junior B grade race on the same machine.
